Killjoy – Memories EP [TUM004] (Release)

Following on from their slew of well received releases so far, including a prime number 1 EP at Juno, Tumble Audio, fresh from their recent slot on Rinse FM, come correct with another slice of urban centric, funky/grime/house hybrid flavours, with the ‘Memories EP’ the second release on the nacent imprint for Nottingham based Killjoy (aka 2nd gen stepper Ashburner/Core).

The EP having already received prominent support from Dusk and Blackdown, Brackles, Marcus Nasty, My Nu Leng, Spooky, Rattus Rattus, Sunday Roast, Jook10 and Formula, sees Killjoy take a more detailed yet, no less impactful take on the genres he draws his influences from than he has before for his three original numbers on the EP.

Fusing, garage influence funky and house riddims, with tough, grimey basslines, evolving percussive figures and an uncanny ability to manipulate small vocal snippets and create unique sound effects that bully his tracks along, Killjoy is definitely one to watch this year.

Stepping up on the remix duties first up is Ghost Records’ Caski, who morphs the grimey funky of Killjoy’s ‘Memories’ into a techy, experimental, bass heavy, atmospheric  half step dubstepper –  drawing on darkness and unease as his weapons of choices for his step up to the wicket.

Second up is Formula Records’ Notion, who’s ‘Digits EP’ set the tones of what to expect from this young, hungry, up and coming producer. Drawing on house sounds and grime riddims as primary influences, Notion creates a tearing, exploratory take on the hottest genre to emerge from the underground this year – the rebirth of instrumental grime.

Tumble Audio was founded in 2012 by then MIMM Recordings label manager Oli Gibbons as an outlet for tunes designed to move dancefloors and exercise sublow frequencies. Since inception, it has taken the Nottingham dance music underground by storm, putting on its own trailblazing nights as well as collaborating with other prominent promoters in the city, to create a newly buzzing and invigorated scene that has many an outside observer looking in with jealous eyes.
