Artist Feature 005: Scissors

For this weeks interview we enter the world of throwback maestros ‘Scissors’; reshaping ‘oldies’ into ‘goldies’ – with a fresh take on reworking well known songs which everyone will know the lyrics too. With the rise of vocal deep house taking the mainstream over, Scissors have approached it differently, growing from a series of free-downloads such as ‘At Night’ and ‘Music Sounds Better With You’ and more recently their track ‘Touch Me’ – dancefloor bangers! The future is certainly bright for this duo so find out more by reading their interview below:

Under the alias ‘Scissors Music’ if you dont mind what are your real names & How did you meet?

Until now, we’re just the Scissors and we’ll try to keep that as long as possible. But let’s use the initials “T” and “A” for the interview questions for keeping it simple.

That’s a funny story how we met. I (T) was deejaying for years already when one day a friend of mine hooked me up like “my girlfriend’s little brother’s producing and he’d like to get in touch with you, could we maybe visit him at his home studio one day?” I was like “yeah man why not”. And so we met and A kept sending me his stuff for a feedback and over the years we became friends and started out making music together.

How old are you all & How did you get into producing music / how long for? And What inspired your artist name?

I’m 24 years old, A’s 21. As I previously said, I was deejaying for about 10 years and during the years I wanted to do my own tracks. A started out as a producer 7 years ago, amazed by the Dutch music scene where everything seemed to be possible in electronic music.

We didn’t had any name so far, just tracks we’ve done together. But as we started out reworking tracks we thought “Scissors” might fit for what we do – cutting tracks into pieces how we want them to sound like.

We love your description on soundcloud through ‘bringing fresh ideas into dancefloor classics’, a theme that is on trend at the moment – so what would you say are your musical influences, whether it be artists from the past, present, upcomming or special instruments / samples?

I grew up with R’n’B/HipHop/Soul/Funk where most of the tracks were sampled. When I got into House music, I’ve noticed the same thing going on in here and so did A.

It would take hours to list all our influences but most likely those influences are coming from tracks and artists which make it possible to make a booty shake from the first play. There are no specific instruments/samples, we have an idea and go on pushing knobs until it sounds like it sounds in our heads.

We got much influences from the Dutch “wide open” music scene and also a lot powerful is coming from the Swedish guys. We also like it drummy and catchy…depends totally on what we think is the right sound for a specific track.

If you could compare yourselves to an already established artist, who would that be and why?

That is a tough question. Basically we don’t want to compare ourselves to others. We want to be us, be Scissors.

Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration? What is your usual songwriting process / software?

We start searching for a track we like and which we miss on the dance floor. After this we start rebuilding the song by ourselves. We’re working with a bunch of software, depends on which one fits to our needs.

What would you say is your signature sound or style?

“Bouncy” that’s how we would like to describe our tracks. We’re not fans of simple 4 to the floor beats. We like to make it bounce with the aim that when you hear it, you have to start moving and dancing.

What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give your music away for free? Why?

Well, this is a big question. We’re giving all our tracks away for free, but for sure if we got the chance for a release, why not. Nobody owns music. As soon as it’s online, everybody has access to it. And whether somebody bought or downloaded it, it’s support. And that’s the only thing that matters.

What do you think your listeners will get out of your music?

Shake their hips! That’s what we want to see the people do when they press play on a Scissors track.

We love your vocal house rework release titled ‘Touch Me’ – what were you thinking about / Inpsired you when this song was developed?

First of all we love Chocolate Puma and the Bingo Players. We’ve had much respect working on this song. We both wanted to bring it back in a new way but didn’t want to screw it up. We were all like “what would they think if they hear it, would they play it?” That’s basically always on our thoughts when we work on tracks.

What are your future plans / goals / aspirations?

We’re trying to push ourselves as good as possible through music blogs as you are and try to reach as many people as possible. Basically it’s fun and no one knows where it leads to, the more the better.
Actually we’re trying to push “Touch Me” through the Spinnin’ Talent Pool and see how far we can come. (Vote-Link: bit.ly/1ttKOKs)

Are they any other artists that are starting to recognise / support you guys who you are proud of?

A few days ago we had a big surprise as David Jones featured “Touch Me” in his last Podcast!
It’s funny how we found our tracks on several music/video platforms uploaded by others which share it by themselves as they like it and we really do appreciate that, no matter who it is.

What are you guys currently working on, can you give us any hints?

Actually we’re working on a lot stuff at the same time so there are a few tracks coming, which you definitely know from the past.

Have you played any live gigs yet?

Not at all.

Where do you hope to play in the future?

Every gig is welcome and we would lie if we say we don’t dream about the big stages all around the world.

What’s your favourite track to listen to / include in your mixes at the moment by another artist?

Scissors – Touch Me…hahah no that’s a tough question too. There are a lot and it totally depends on the crowd how we play so there are no special tracks we’re focused on.

Are you guys signed to any labels? Have any in mind? Or want to be independant for now?

Actually we’re independent and looking forward for a good label to work with.

Any final shoutouts / words for your fans?

We’d like to thank all of you supporting us so much from the beginning! We’re thankful for every kind of support and will keep on working for you guys! Be ready for a bunch of new stuff.
